Identification of new sources of Hessian fly resistance in tetraploid wheat

چکیده
Hessian fly (HF) (Mayetiola destructor Say) is an obligate destructive pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) causing severe economic losses worldwide. Deployment resistant cultivars harboring HF resistance (H) genes still the most effective and economical method to manage this insect pest. However, extensive use H can impose selection pressure on populations, leading development virulent biotypes that breakdown plant resistance. Further, increase in environmental temperatures 25–30°C during wheat-growing season also negatively impact resistance, thereby necessitating identification new novel sources evaluate them for temperature sensitivity. In current study, we evaluated phenotypic response 254 Triticum turgidum (L.) accessions African origin Biotype L infestation. Of these, 10 exhibited >70% These showed when screened with vH13 biotype. Additionally, these lines were expression at a higher 30°C, three tetraploid maintained 100% increased identified. newly identified offer valuable tools breeders farmers be used breeding programs develop durable efficient crop management.

Genetic Mapping of an Aegilops tauschii–derived Hessian Fly Resistance Gene in Common Wheat
Hessian fl y [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] is a major threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the eastern United States. Cultivar releases containing major Hessian fl y resistance genes have proven effective in minimizing losses caused by this pest. Nevertheless, the ephemeral nature of major gene resistance necessitates the identifi cation of novel sources of resistance. Hessian fl...
متن کاملInduced epidermal permeability modulates resistance and susceptibility of wheat seedlings to herbivory by Hessian fly larvae
Salivary secretions of neonate Hessian fly larvae initiate a two-way exchange of molecules with their wheat host. Changes in properties of the leaf surface allow larval effectors to enter the plant where they trigger plant processes leading to resistance and delivery of defence molecules, or susceptibility and delivery of nutrients. To increase understanding of the host plant's response, the ti...
متن کاملShort Communication Sources of Stem Rust Resistance in Ethiopian Tetraploid Wheat Accessions
Stem or black rust of wheat caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici Ericks and Henn (Pgt) is an important disease on wheat worldwide. Pgt is an obligate biotroph, heteroceous in its life cycle and heterothallic in mating type. Seedlings of 41 emmer (Triticum dicoccum), 56 durum (T. durum) wheat accessions were tested for their response to stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tricti...
متن کاملUltrastructural changes in the midguts of Hessian fly larvae feeding on resistant wheat.
The focus of the present study was to compare ultrastructure in the midguts of larvae of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), under different feeding regimens. Larvae were either fed on Hessian fly-resistant or -susceptible wheat, and each group was compared to starved larvae. Within 3h of larval Hessian fly feeding on resistant wheat, midgut microvilli were disrupted, and after 6h, mic...
متن کاملSearching for wheat resistance to aphids and wheat bulb fly in the historical Watkins and Gediflux wheat collections.: Wheat resistance to aphids and wheat bulb fly
Insect pests can reduce wheat yield by direct feeding and transmission of plant viruses. Here we report results from laboratory and field phenotyping studies on a wide range of wheat, including landraces from the Watkins collection deriving from before the green revolution, more modern cultivars from the Gediflux collection (north-western Europe) and modern UK Elite varieties, for resistance to...
